VOLUNTEERING WITH US

Volunteering at J-Ann provides an excellent opportunity for motivated and committed individuals who want to make a difference to the less privileged in Ghana society. Over recent years the Centre has hosted a number of successful placements (GO TO VOLUNTEER STORIES). Soon we will be able to provide safe accommodation and food at the Centre itself.

Talk to a former volunteer and now Advisory Board member, Cleo Bowen. Ask her all you need to know before taking that first step…..connect via Joseph to talk to Cleo.

What can volunteers expect in a role
Given that we can only host small numbers, it is possible to create an experience, tailored to each volunteer. Volunteers can play a part in educating, health wellbeing and Centre organisation and management. Typical roles include:

Teaching supervisor
Improve teaching quality
We are always looking to improve our way of teaching. We welcome qualified teachers and education students to bring their own experience to our classrooms, and coach our teachers to help us reach higher standards of teaching.

Funding
Critical to our survival
Work to support the generation of income for J-Ann, networking, writing proposals, looking for new funding sources in-country and internationally. Contribute to the developed strategy and on-going research to provide opportunity for growth, help more children and provide a sustainable future for the Centre.

Marketing
Help us spread the word
We are also looking for Marketing volunteers to help us expand our presence on social media, to help us raise awareness for the Centre in Ghana and internationally. Marketing volunteers will also help us identify fundraising opportunities and reach out to potential donors.

Health & Hospitals
A key concern for the children
Support health education programs (hygiene, nutrition, first aid awareness) and assist in coordinating medical outreach with partner clinics or hospitals. Get involved in health screenings and wellness activities for children, providing basic first aid support under supervision. You will need compassion, basic health knowledge and a willingness to learn.

Sports
Encourage fitness and wellbeing
Coach and supervise children in different sporting activities (football, athletics, indoor games). Organising sports clinics, competitions, and recreational events will encourage teamwork, discipline, and healthy competition. The children will learn more about fitness, exercise, and fair play. You will need plenty of energy, a focus on teambuilding, basic coaching or sports enthusiasm.

ICT (Information & Communication Technology)
Promote computer literacy
Introduce and coach the basics, including using the keyboard, MS Office, email use, internet safety. Support coding and digital skills workshops for children. Help maintain ICT lab equipment (if available). Introduce children to online research and e-learning platforms. Train staff and pupils on the use of technology for learning. You will need broad ICT knowledge, patience in teaching, adaptability.

Student records
Digitise our student records
All of our student admission records, performance reports, parent surveys, etc. are currently in paper format, which is cumbersome to store and to analyse. Recognising the need to track and analyse students’ and the school’s performance, we are now looking for volunteers to help us transform all our records into a digital format that will be easy for us to maintain, track and analyse.

Data Analyst
Analyse data and produce social impact reports
As we are gradually having student records, performance reports, etc. digitised, we would like to seek help from volunteers to develop models or systems to analyse and track overall and individual student progression, to forecast the school’s financial accounting and class capacity Data Analyst volunteers’ help will greatly help us quantify the progress we and our students have made, and will be essential for us to develop social impact reports to apply for NGO grants.

Orientation and practical matters
First time volunteers can expect to be prepared well by Joseph, Mils (Volunteer lead) and the team. Even the more experienced will benefit from tips and guidance on coming to Ghana and living in society here. It is a welcoming and safe place generally but there are always challenges to be prepared for. The Centre is outside Greater Accra but there is plenty of opportunity to have time in the city itself when off-duty.

Come and enjoy this wonderful country and make a difference to disadvantaged children……

I am ready to start my volunteer journey
